Work and achievements

The First Amnesty International office was set up in 1966 in Bihar, India. Since then, this organization has worked on several cases related to torture, prisoner abuse, abusive laws, women’s rights, corporate accountability, and other human rights violations.

Some of the great achievements by the Amnesty India are as below:

Controversies

The government of India freezes Amnesty International India’s bank account on 10th Sep 2020. Due to this action, Amnesty India has been compelled to let go of its staff in India.

This is the latest in the witch-hunting of human rights organizations by the Modi Government. Amnesty International India said in his statement, “The continuing crackdown on Amnesty International India over the last two years and the complete freezing of bank accounts is not accidental. The constant harassment by government agencies including the Enforcement Directorate is a result of our unequivocal calls for transparency in the government, more recently for accountability of the Delhi police and the Government of India regarding the grave human rights violations in the Delhi riots and Jammu & Kashmir. For a movement that has done nothing but raises its voices against injustice, this latest attack is akin to freezing dissent,” said Avinash Kumar, Executive Director of Amnesty International India.

Incidences followed to the halt of Amnesty International India

  • In June 2019, Amnesty International India was denied permission to hold the press conference. Amnesty India wanted to launch in Srinagar to release its third ‘Lawless Law’ report on the misuse and abuse of the Public Safety Act in Jammu and Kashmir. It was forced to digitally release it.
  • On 22 October 2019, Amnesty International testified at the US Congressional hearing on the situation of human rights issues in South Asia. They kept the main focus on Jammu and Kashmir since the unilateral abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution of India in their testification.
  • Two weeks after the testimony on 15 November 2019, the offices of Amnesty International India and the residence of one of its directors were raided again by the CBI.
  • On 5 August 2020, released an article on the situation of human rights in Jammu and Kashmir. On 28 August 2020, Amnesty International India released an investigative brief on the complicity of Delhi police in the North-East Delhi in February 2020 riots which took the lives of at least 53 people, mostly from the minority Muslim community.

The release of these two publications by the Amnesty International seems not to be liked and endorsed by the Modi Government and suddenly On 10 September, 2020 Amnesty International India comes to know that all its bank accounts were completely frozen by the Enforcement Directorate halting most of their work of the human rights.

Reports published by Amnesty International India talk deep about the human rights violations committed by the Delhi police during the North-East Delhi in February 2020 riots. They make a serious allegation and question the Delhi Police about their role throughout the riot. This is one of the reasons the Modi Government and the Delhi police who report directly to the Amit Shah, current Home Minister of India, are not happy.

Delhi Police Respond

Delhi Police instantly denied any allegation made on them and said the report by Amnesty International India on the north-east Delhi riots was “lopsided, biased against the police, and has maliciously made a case of human rights violations”.

Government killing dissents: Activist KAVITA KRISHNAN

After such action from the Government, critics say this is another coward attempt by the ruling government to kill the dissents one by one to hide their failure to lead India towards a better India.

I think this raises a big question in which the world needs to wake up and recognize that India is no longer a functioning democracy

– Activist KAVITA KRISHNAN

“India’s stature as a liberal democracy with free institutions, including media & civil society organizations, accounted for much of its soft power in the world. Actions like this both undermine our reputation as a democracy & vitiate our soft power,” Shashi Tharoor said on Twitter.

Amnesty International India is reported & allegedly found violating provisions of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act and that the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate are conducting investigations against it.
