Having graduated from Holy Cross School in Tadong, Ugen is affiliated with the Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association (SATA). He’s been dedicated to Taekwondo since the tender age of 3 and has since established himself as one of the nation’s finest Taekwondo players.
During his time at Suseong University, Ugen was fascinated by the diverse international student community. He noticed a significant difference in their mindset, which he found more advanced and open. He was also impressed with their high aptitude levels and the modern teaching techniques used in the Korean education system.
Ugen Gurung Taekwondo
Ugen Gurung, an impressive 18-year-old Taekwondo talent hailing from Sikkim. Ugen’s exceptional Taekwondo skills earned him a scholarship for a three-year course in Graphic Animation and Sports at Suseong University, Korea, sponsored by the Korean Government – a historic first for someone from his state.
Currently, Ugen is undergoing rigorous Taekwondo training in Korea under the guidance of Prof Kim Kaman, an international coach and referee with experience judging Taekwondo at the Olympics and other international events. Despite the demanding schedule that sometimes allows him only four hours of sleep, Ugen is content with the invaluable knowledge he’s gaining from Prof Kiman’s outstanding training.
To date, Ugen has an impressive record of 21 gold medals, 4 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals. He has participated in a total of 6 international, 6 national, and 12 state-level events. His journey began in 2001 when he won his first medal at the state-level Taekwondo championship held at Paljor Stadium, and he hasn’t looked back since.
